After reading your article, Europe’s Racist Far Right is Not on the Rise. It’s Always Been There, and this one, I think these women have always been there, as well.
While feminism appears to be a 100+ year-old phenomenon, I imagine if we knew the stories of women in the past, we would see that there have always been true feminists and these kinds of women. I do not want anything to do with them. I have a few of them as relatives.
What is troubling is the right’s penchant for wanting to co-op everything, to make it their own. So now they are trying to apply the term, feminist, to themselves. They are also honing their messages as time moves forward, to make them sound more and more positive (like the phrase that has influenced hundreds of thousands of women — pro-life).
Feminists should not tolerate it, especially the use of the term, feminism. Feminism is the recognition that women have the right to be independent, to have the means to achieve that, and have the ability to earn incomes that are equal to men’s.
You refer to these women as alt-feminists, but perhaps they should be called false-feminists. (Maybe someone else has a better term because I imagine they would turn this around in a heartbeat.)
For me, the real question is: How do we enable these women to see that seeking security in this manner can lead to some of the most despicable acts known to humanity?
