I don't think it's growing, I think you've answered it for yourself.

Technology is simply allowing "like-minded individuals... to share information."

I do happen to be one of them, but it's incredibly hard to connect with people if you don't share the beliefs in that particular community. I don't belong to the "spiritual" community because I have only experienced effects on my consciousness. I don't even know if I have a spirit that is separate from my consciousness. And many of the claims in "spiritual" communities are conflicting.
