If You Think You Understand Spirituality, It’s Important to Read This
I never dreamed I would have anything to add to the conversation about God and spirituality, but in 1998 that changed when I shared a story about an event that I was 99% sure God had caused. Then, a few years later another event occurred, and I began to question everything I’d been taught about God.

I was writing a lot by that point, mostly about my experiences as a woman and a feminist, so I included the events at the end of a collection I presented at a writer’s convention in 2012. A month later another profound experience occurred and I decided I needed to write a memoir.
I found out about social media at the convention, then I discovered a number of online communities that were focused on spiritual beliefs. I tried to go along with some of the things I was seeing, but nothing matched what I’d been experiencing. A friend gave me a copy of Eckhart Tolle’s book, A New Earth, and I was really surprised by what I read. Of course, I figured there was nothing I could do about it, but then one afternoon, when I was in a writer’s workshop, a brief conversation compelled me to follow a vague thought, and as I allowed myself to follow the creative process, I discovered information and added a few personal experiences that explain the foundations of many popular spiritual concepts, showing that a lot of them are not “spiritual” in the sense many people think they are. A couple of the discoveries were beyond anything I ever imagined I’d find.

Critical Revelations in the Realm of Contemporary Spirituality is a demonstration of the kind of events I am experiencing, but it also demonstrates why it is so important to stay true to who we are, even if it is incredibly hard. The structure I used to share the information also gave me an opportunity to share the ideas I’ve developed about God, and I hope you will find the ideas at least thought-provoking and perhaps even of value.
I never expected to be in this place. Like a lot of people, I am simply someone who has been looking for the truth. I certainly never expected to have anything substantial to say about God or spirituality, so I am struggling with the information I am sharing in a number of ways, but I hope the information I share in the book will help everyone understand this a little better.
